| I make learning music fun and enjoyable. Students interests come first in order to keep their enthusiasm for playing and practicing. As they gain confidence and experience, they also gain interest in a wide variety of styles. Technique (using fingers, hands and arms in a relaxed and efficient manner) and theory (how music is written and formed) are integrated into all that we do. They are made palatable by avoiding teaching these areas apart from their relation to whatever music we are playing. We also do alot of creating: most students enjoy making up their own music. And we learn to play by ear as well as to read music. Besides immensely enjoying what I do, I am highly qualified. I have been teaching for over twenty years and have a Masters Degree in piano performance and composition from CU Boulder. I have enjoyed considerable success as a pianist and composer in NYC, where I lived and worked for the past fourteen years. My new choral work, Anna's Poems, is being premiered by the Boulder Chorale in May, and a new song cycle set to the poetry of Boulder poet Eleanor De Woskin, is being premiered at the Nicholas Roerich Museum in Manhattan in the spring. Come and join the fun and excitement in my studio in Louisville! |

| I enjoy teaching kids and adults, helping people to enjoy music while learning and having over 25 years teaching experience. I am currently finishing my doctorate at CU-Boulder in piano performance. I have a masters degree in violin performance and pedagogy (teaching). My basic principles of teaching include how a person can learn to play (even on their own- this is the goal!), how to sight-read easier and faster, how ear training and theory makes sight reading easier(so learning new pieces becomes easier, how learning the theory of the music pulls in the big picture of music and the whole picture begins to make sense. Please call for a lesson and please ask for references. My cell number is 303-818-7868, or email me at Catherine.Millis@colorado.edu if you have any questions.rnI won an international piano competition in 2005 and performed in Carnegie Weill Hall, and I performed solos with the Longmont Symphony in 2005 and 2007(Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini and Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue). I teach piano and violin in SW Longmont. |

| BIO INFORMATION |
| As piano teacher, my emphases are to develop a rich, focused tone quality and to explore expressive touch and gesture that can bring a piece of music to imaginative life. The repertory is 17th-21st centuries and usually "classical." My most recent book is Deepening Musical Performance through Movement (Indiana University Press, also in paperback, spring, 2010). I co-authored two earlier books on balanced movement: Expressive Movement (Da Capo Press) and Generous Movement (Center of Balance Press). My Ph.D. is from Brandeis University; M.A. from Harvard; M. Mus. from the New England Conservatory; B. Mus. from the University of Michigan. I have taught musicianship-through- movement to singers and to performers of most instruments, and have led workshops at schools and universities in the U.S., Canada, and the UK. |

| My teaching goal is to help students develop their musical potential through instruction in piano. I enjoy working with all levels, beginners through advanced students, and all ages, including adults. I have regular acoustic pianos and a Technics PR700 digital piano in my home. I use the following materials tailored to each student’s needs and desires: Method & Repertoire books, Technique exercises, Duet & ensemble music. The digital piano allows the student to play along with commercial accompaniment disks, experience 200 different sounds and to digitally record pieces in multi-level tracks. In addition, I have a computer lab for self-instructed study of music theory, ear training, composer’s lives, history and other general music topics.
EDUCATION & TRAINING: As the daughter of a piano teacher, I have been playing the piano and other instruments, and have been around piano instruction all my life. I began teaching piano in high school and have continued ever since. My formal instruction includes a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Kansas and a Masters of Music in Piano Accompanying from the University of Southern California. For the past 6 years, I have accompanied violin and cello students for the Boulder Suzuki School and other teachers. |
